Build it once. Build it right.

Six ways to work together — from a single consultancy day to a full platform build with ongoing support. Every engagement is scoped and priced in writing before work starts.

01 — Custom software

Software built around your process

Off-the-shelf tools force your business to bend around their assumptions. When the mismatch starts costing real hours, a purpose-built tool pays for itself fast. I build internal systems, data engines and back-office applications that do exactly what your team needs — and nothing they'll never use.

  • Internal tools & dashboardsOrder management, stock control, reporting, quoting tools, admin panels.
  • Data processing enginesImport, clean, transform and reconcile data between systems that don't talk.
  • APIs & servicesFastAPI, Flask and Node.js services with authentication, logging and docs.
  • Performance-critical workC++ and C# where speed matters — trading logic, simulation, heavy computation.

Good fit if…

  • Your team runs the business out of a spreadsheet that's become load-bearing
  • Two systems hold the same data and someone re-types it between them
  • You've outgrown a SaaS tool but the migration looks terrifying
  • A previous developer left and nobody can safely change the code

02 — Web development

Websites that load fast and convert

A website is a sales tool, not a business card. I build sites that are quick on a phone on mobile data, readable by search engines, accessible to everyone, and easy for you to update without calling a developer every time a price changes.

  • Marketing & brochure sitesHand-built, no bloated page-builder — typically loading in under a second.
  • Web applications & portalsCustomer logins, quoting tools, booking systems, live data dashboards.
  • SEO & performance groundworkSemantic markup, structured data, sitemaps, Core Web Vitals, analytics.
  • Rebuilds & rescuesSlow, broken or unmaintainable sites brought back under control.

Every site ships with

  • Mobile-first responsive layout, tested on real devices
  • Accessibility basics: contrast, keyboard nav, screen-reader labels
  • Meta tags, Open Graph, sitemap.xml and robots.txt
  • Analytics, contact routing and spam protection
  • Hosting set up, SSL, and a written handover doc

03 — eCommerce

Stores that scale past the manual ceiling

Most online stores hit the same wall: the storefront is fine, but listing products, syncing stock and writing descriptions eats every spare hour. I build the store and the machinery behind it — which is exactly the work that drove a 119% profit increase on a recent client engagement.

  • Shopify builds & migrationsNew stores, theme customisation, and moves from legacy platforms without losing SEO.
  • Catalogue automationBulk listing, AI-generated descriptions, image handling, variant and pricing rules.
  • IntegrationsShopify Admin & Storefront APIs, suppliers, couriers, accounting and stock systems.
  • Custom storefront featuresFitment finders, configurators, bundles and anything the app store doesn't sell.

Where the wins usually are

  • Listing time per product cut from minutes to seconds
  • Descriptions and SEO copy generated on-brand, at volume
  • Stock and pricing synced instead of manually reconciled
  • Dead listings, duplicates and bad data cleaned automatically
  • Staff hours moved from data entry to actual selling

04 — AI automation

AI where it pays, not where it's fashionable

The value in AI right now is unglamorous: reading messy documents, writing thousands of product descriptions, classifying enquiries, extracting data from sites that have no API. I build those systems with guardrails, review steps and a fallback for when the model gets it wrong — because in production, it sometimes will.

  • LLM-based workflowsContent generation, summarisation, classification, extraction and enrichment.
  • Scraping & data pipelinesSelenium and Playwright pipelines that gather, clean and structure data reliably.
  • Machine learning integrationTensorFlow and PyTorch models wired into real systems, not left in a notebook.
  • Orchestration & monitoringScheduling, retries, cost controls, audit logs and human-in-the-loop approval.

An honest caveat

Not every process should be automated. Some are too rare to be worth it, some are too risky to hand to a model, and some just need a better spreadsheet. If that's the answer, I'll tell you on the first call rather than sell you a project.

The tasks worth automating are usually the ones that are high-volume, rule-shaped and currently done by a person who'd rather be doing something else.

Technical Consultancy

Sometimes you don't need a build — you need someone technical, independent and unafraid to say "don't do that" before you commit budget.

  • Automation & AI audit — a walkthrough of your workflows with a ranked list of what's worth automating, what it saves and what it costs.
  • Architecture review — an assessment of an existing system: risks, bottlenecks, security gaps and a prioritised plan.
  • Build vs buy — impartial advice on whether to license, extend or build from scratch.
  • Fractional engineering — days or half-days for teams that need senior input without a hire.
  • Second opinion — a review of a quote or proposal from another supplier before you sign.

Support & Maintenance

Software isn't finished when it launches. Dependencies age, APIs change, and businesses evolve. A retainer keeps someone who knows the code close to hand.

  • Monthly retainer — an agreed block of hours for fixes, tweaks and small enhancements, with priority response.
  • Ad-hoc support — pay-as-you-go for occasional issues, billed by the hour.
  • Monitoring & upkeep — uptime checks, error alerting, dependency and security updates.
  • Codebase rescue — taking over an inherited or abandoned project, documenting it and making it safe to change.
  • Training & handover — written docs and walkthroughs so your team isn't dependent on me.

Working together

Three ways to engage

Pick whichever suits the work. Pricing is quoted per project after the discovery call — no hidden day-rate creep.

Fixed-scope project

A defined deliverable with a written spec, milestones and a fixed price. Best when you know what you want built.

  • Price agreed before work starts
  • Milestone-based payments
  • Change requests quoted separately

Monthly retainer

An ongoing block of engineering time each month. Best for evolving systems and continuous improvement.

  • Agreed hours, priority response
  • Rolling monthly, cancel with notice
  • Unused time discussed, never wasted

Consultancy day

A day or half-day of senior technical input — audit, review, planning or pairing with your team.

  • Remote or on-site in the UK
  • Written summary and recommendations
  • Credited against a follow-on project
Process

How a project actually runs

No mystery, no radio silence. You'll always know what's being built, what it costs and what's next.

01

Discovery call — free

Thirty minutes on what's not working, what you've already tried and what a good outcome looks like. If I'm not the right person for it, I'll say so and point you somewhere better.

02

Proposal & fixed quote

A written document: scope, what's explicitly out of scope, milestones, timeline, price and payment schedule. You approve it before anything is built.

03

Build in short cycles

Work happens in weekly increments against your real data, with a demo at the end of each one. Problems and priorities surface while they're still cheap to change.

04

Test, harden, document

Edge cases, error handling, logging and backups. Everything goes into version control with a README your future developer can follow.

05

Launch & train

Deployment to your infrastructure, accounts transferred into your name, and a walkthrough for whoever will use it day to day.

06

Aftercare

A warranty window for anything that doesn't behave as specified, then optional ongoing support if you want it. No obligation either way.

FAQ

Questions worth asking

What does a project cost?
It depends entirely on scope, so I quote per project rather than publishing a price list that would be wrong for most people. After a free discovery call you get a written fixed-price proposal. A small automation script and a full eCommerce platform are very different numbers, and you'll know yours before committing to anything.
How long does a build take?
A focused automation or a marketing site is usually measured in weeks; a custom application or a store build with integrations is typically one to three months. The proposal includes a timeline with milestones, and you see working software at the end of every cycle rather than waiting until the end.
Who owns the code?
You do, on final payment. Source code, repositories, hosting accounts and documentation are transferred into your name. Nothing is held back as leverage, and you're free to take the project to another developer at any point.
You're one person — what if you're unavailable?
A fair question, and the reason everything ships with version control, documentation and standard technology rather than anything exotic. Your code sits in your repository, on your accounts, written so another competent developer can pick it up. For larger builds I'll be upfront about capacity before taking the work on.
Do you work with existing codebases?
Yes — inherited and half-finished projects are a regular part of the work. That usually starts with a short paid review so I can give you an honest assessment of the state it's in, what it would cost to stabilise, and whether repairing or rebuilding is the better investment.
Are you available for on-site work?
Yes, within the UK. Most delivery happens remotely, which keeps costs down, but discovery sessions, workshops and consultancy days are often more productive in person. Travel is agreed in the proposal.
What size of business do you work with?
Mostly SMEs and owner-managed businesses — the ones where a single well-aimed system makes a visible difference to the P&L. I also take on subcontract work for agencies needing specialist AI, automation or integration capability.
